Kinsley grabbed on to the crumbling stone of the tunnel opening, her thoughts mushrooming. She adjusted the small backpack purse she’d brought along.

Was she foolish to come back here while the investigation was still ongoing? Had she dragged Jasper in the wrong direction—should they have gone to the funeral home first? She bent in half, scouring the ground. Nothing so far.

She’d better make this worth their while, then. Find the recorder. Get out of here.

They slipped inside the tunnel, passing the spot where she’d waited when her attacker first approached her. She bumped Jasper’s arm as shadows swallowed them whole. If he noticed—or minded—her clumsiness, he didn’t show it.

Jasper cleared his throat. “Any thoughts about what this file from your aunt might contain?”

“I’ve had lots of thoughts about it, but I still have no idea. I can’t believe Rhonda was involved in anything criminal.” It was like believing a hummingbird could take down a hawk.

“I hear you. I don’t believe that, either.” He hesitated. “Could she know something bad about you?”

“Me? I’m not perfect, Jasper, but I don’t have any skeletons in my closet.” She huffed, then considered his position. Police officer in the midst of an investigation. Asking questions. That was it. “The only person who might have something against me is Marta. My coworker at the zoo? You checked her out, though, right?”

“I did. The message came through earlier. She was clean,” he acknowledged.

“I have been trying to figure out why she would do this. It seems way out of character, even for her. I considered texting her to say hi and see how she responds.”

“What’s Marta like? Is she a levelheaded or emotional person?”

Kinsley pursed her lips. “I guess Marta is kind of up and down with her emotions, but her husband left. She has teenaged kids, and it’s been a rough few years.”

“Yeah. Single parenthood is the hardest thing I’ve ever done.”

“From what I’ve seen, you’re an amazing dad to Gabe.”

“My mom gets a lot of the credit. So do Noah and Brielle, my sister. I don’t know where I’d be without my family.” He leaned in, picking at a clump of moss on the wall over her head. Their faces were only inches apart. “For now, let law enforcement take care of the situation with Marta. Don’t text or call her. Please.”

“Okay.” Her heart leapfrogged from his nearness.

He inched backward, giving her breathing room. “We’ll get this solved. You can attend Rhonda’s memorial, then get back home and continue doing what you love.”

Her throat convulsed in a swallow. “Thank you.”

“There’s something else.” He paused, looked away. “When I get back to the station later, I’m pulling the files from your parents’ accident.”

She stiffened. “Why?”

“Because it’s my job, and I’m curious. I’m considering all possibilities here. What if there’s something about that investigation that—”

“Please don’t, Jasper.”

“Every time your parents’ accident comes up, you shut down.”

“You have no room to talk. I used to ask about your dad, but you would clam right up.”

He released a drawn-out sigh, and his mouth opened.
